Can you smell it yet? Texas Rangers Pennant Fever!!

New ownership, old ownership, unknown ownership, who gives a crap? For the first time in my memory, the Texas Rangers baseball organization is going for it big time! With no leadership other than what’s on the field and what’s in the dugout, the Rangers have decided to do everything in their power to make this year a reality for themselves and their very loyal and patient fans. This is the year!

As the Nolan Ryan/Chuck Greenberg situation kept hitting snag after snag and MLB and the lawyers, judges, behind the scenes money men, out front money men, or well know money men like Mark Cuban all kept their eyes wide open on the Rangers financial and ownership status, the front office has done a splendid job of making things happen when nobody thought anything was possible. Kudos to Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan for doing whatever it took to make some deals pan out and better this team for this years Pennant run.

When Texas fans heard of the move to acquire Benji Molina, it was a ho-hum type of deal for most fans. Nothing to knock your socks off but baseball folk knew this was a wise move getting an experienced catcher with a decent stick and exceptional glove for the playoffs. Molina has already shown he can hit a little and his style behind the mask is solid. The second move by Texas was an outright theft of stealing Cliff Lee from Seattle. I mean were talking a Pau Gasolesque theft like the Lakers did to Memphis a few years back. Hmm, seems the Lakers have benefited nicely from that deal winning two straight NBA Titles. I could live with two World Series Titles!

You hear that Ranger fans? Somehow the Rangers were able to get Lee from Seattle without having to part with either of their top two pitchers in the farm system, Martin Perez or Tanner Scheppers. No need to go over the numbers Cliff Lee has tossed for Texas in his first four starts, but they are sick and he’s been masterful on the mound. The dude is smooth as silk and if anyone, I mean anyone ever see’s him sweat on the mound…please take a picture for me! He’s so calm and cool out there it’s amazing. Texas jumped out of the gates after the All-Star break  and has not looked back. Having a very nice roadtrip in Boston and Detroit and then coming home to take care of business against division rivals LA Angels and Oakland didn’t stink. Texas continues to stretch their lead in the AL West. You can never have a big enough lead, NEVER! Especially since it’s been forever since you’ve been there.

After taking the final game of the series last night against Oakland 7-4 and CJ Wilson nabbed his 10th win of the year, you might’ve thought the Rangers would be happy, satisfied. Nope! Not satisfied and not done yet making moves to better this club for THIS YEARS PENNANT! Jon Daniels & company pulled off another slick move by trading for Jorge Cantu of the Marlins. A very solid, dependable power hitter with the ability to play first, second, third, or sell popcorn. Cantu’s arrival sends good guy/poor hitter Chris Davis back to the minors and brings up another youngster, Mitch Moreland to platoon with Cantu. Another delicious move by Daniels and company to add a specific need to the club. Okay, now you’re done making deals, right? Wrong!

When most of us heard Ian Kinsler was heading to the DL for 15 days, we shrugged our shoulders and said, okay, we’ll be alright with the backups we have on this team. Ron Washington will figure it out and all will be okay until Kinsler’s return. You think Jon Daniels and Nolan Ryan felt that way? Hell no, not this year. This is the YEAR! With Kinsler’s injury short term, Daniels and company scoured the rosters for a solid utility guy with some experience. They got the perfect fit, Christian Guzman. He’ll be just what the doctor ordered not only for the next 15 days, but will be a huge factor come postseason. MARK MY WORDS! A HUGE FACTOR! A great acquisition by Daniels and Ryan.

Whatever it takes to get it done this year, the Texas Rangers are going for it. With or without Ownership. Don’t ask me how the hell they are doing all these deals without money and such. I have no idea. But, I don’t care. I’m thrilled these guys for the first time in my memory, are getting the players to come to Texas. See what happens when you win! People want to come to the party. Everyone loves a winner. Everyone loves a party. Especially a postseason party. One that most people around these parts have no idea what a postseason game is like. Hell, Michael Young has never played in a playoff game. Can you beleive that? You think he’s jacked up about what’s going on with this team the past few weeks. It’s all good Ranger fans. It’s all good.

So now what? Enjoy the ride, enjoy the journey the next month or two. As a life long Houston Astros fan, I’ve experienced the postseason quite a bit. It’s as good as it gets having your team in the playoffs. I don’t have a crystal ball in front of me to tell me what the future holds. If I did, I’d be in Las Vegas at the Bellagio betting my ass off. But, I don’t have one. All I can tell you is this Rangers team is as primed for a serious playoff run as any team in the league. They have all the tools and ammunition to advance in the postseason. How far? It could be real far. You never know when it’s your year to win it all and I don’t know if the Texas Rangers will win it all. I sure as hell am going to enjoy the journey for the next few months. You better too. It’s been so long, who knows where they’ll be next year! Better set your schedules up now for that October fun. Playoffs at the Ballpark in Arlington. Sounds to good to be true. Anyway, I’ll see ya at the Ballpark in October! Yea, that’s right….October baby….Postseason…Playoffs…World…okay, I’ll hold off on that for a another month or so. Enjoy the ride, there is nothing like it!
