SOCCER, Ignore it long enough it’ll go away…except for this!

Okay, I’m not going to write a long article about a sport that’s important to many people around the world, but obviously not me. I’ve said for nearly twenty years on the air and I won’t change my tune now, if you ignore Soccer long enough, it’ll go away. Yes, I’ve said it again. There is a however.

However, when it comes to this game of Soccer/Futbol, there is a time when I actually do enjoy watching the sport. World Cup time. That’s it. No other time of the year will I watch any soccer of any kind. It’s not my cup of tea.

I love Boxing tremendously and know that they’re are several people who can’t stand the sport. No sweat, I can understand that. But there is something about the passion and the emotion that World Cup Soccer brings to the forefront that I enjoy. The crowds are chanting the whole game, players representing their countries and fans dressed to the hilt in their colors. It’s actually something I can’t explain as to why I enjoy it so much now as opposed to any other time. I just dig it.

I never would sit and watch a soccer match, ever. It’s like watching paint dry. It normally has the excitement of a car door closing. I wouldn’t dare turn it on, ever. So why now? World Cup Soccer? I’m still trying to understand it all and take it in game by game. World Cup 2010 started yesterday with host nation South Africa putting on a terrific opening ceremony and more importantly, shocking many in the world by tying Mexico 1-1 in the first game. It’s a great start for World Cup 2010. The only thing that would make it better is for the United States to surprise us all with a shocking opening round victory over powerhouse England today.

Either way, I’ve got my USA undies on and I’m rooting like heck for a win. Me and soccer? Only when the World Cup is around, otherwise….if you ignore it long enough, it’ll go away.

  1. Mark, I don’t understand why you, or any one else on the Ticket aren’t talking about TCU/UT and the super regionals….Thanks.
